Over the winter months, this blog features some of the best plants that are especially adapted to the winter months here in Utah. Please check out the other parts of this article:
All of the plants featured in this 3-part series of articles have several things in common:
Also known as Lenten Roses or Christmas Roses, Hellebores are not roses at all. They belong to the buttercup family. Hellebores flower for a long period of time, up to 3 months in good conditions and feature colors that range from white, pink and purple with numerous shades and combinations in between. In addition, hellebores tolerate drought well, are disliked by both deer and rabbits and are easy to care for.
Winter heath is a low-growing evergreen shrub that thrives during the cooler months of the year. It generates pink and purple flowers beginning in January through May. Other benefits of the winter heath is that they grow quickly and provide excellent ground cover and deer dislike it. It is a versatile plant that can be grown in rocky areas such as slopes and rock gardens or nearly any other area that stays cool in the summer.
Sweet box is an evergreen shrub that provides excellent ground cover, and tolerates both shade and sun making it a flowering plant that you can grow almost anywhere. It blooms in late winter to early spring and generates fragrant, small, white flowers while most other plants are still dormant. Keep a careful eye on it though, it can spread into a large thicket up to five feet tall if it is not periodically trimmed back. Sweet box is also a popular plant for container gardening and for privacy hedges.
