5 Simple Landscape Design Projects You Can Complete This Fall

Posted : October 8, 2020

As summer comes to an end, and the air gets cooler and crisper, it is the perfect time to take on a few simple landscape design projects.

1 – Design a Rock Garden or Other Hardscape Installation

The good thing about a hardscape installation is that it really doesn’t matter when you do it. But the weather in fall makes this a great time to undertake this project. Cool air makes it comfortable to work outdoors, and because you are not on a tight schedule as you might be when planting new trees, shrubs, grass, you can take your time and put it together when you have free time.

2 – Construct an Outdoor Firepit

An outdoor firepit is a simple project that can be constructed in an afternoon with a shovel, some clay or concrete pavers, and some elbow grease. A firepit can be a fun addition to your outdoor living space. Who doesn’t enjoy roasting marshmallows over a fire on a crisp autumn night?

3 – Set-Up a Tiered Landscaping Area

Fall is a great time to set up a tiered landscaping area. Now that the seasonal flowers have withered away and the lawn growth slows, use that extra time to set up some tiered landscaping areas. Whether you decide to set up some stone steps, tiered retaining walls for next year’s flowerbeds, raised vegetable planters, or an interesting setup for your rock garden, there is no better time than now to get it done.

4 – Plant New Trees & Shrubs

Few people are aware that fall is an excellent time to plant new trees and shrubs. The soil is warm and moist, and most of all they don’t have to devote energy to produce leaves and they can focus on growing roots before winter sets in. Be sure to select plants that work best in your area. The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map shows you which plants will work best in your area. Most zones in the Salt Lake City area are in 6a or 6b zones, so make sure the plants you select indicate that they can thrive in these zones.

5 – Seed Grass

The warm soil, temperate air, and plentiful moisture make the fall one of the best times to seed or reseed grass. This gives the grass time to take root and get ready to grow strong and healthy in the spring.
